Acceptable Use of the Internet and Library Public Computers

COMPUTER USAGE POLICY AND DISCLAIMER

Confidentiality

Utopia Memorial Library cannot guarantee privace or confidentiality of any material accessed or store in our computer system.  All such information is available to the public.

Copyright

U.S. copyright law (Title 17, U.S. Code) pohibits the unauthorized reproduction or distribution of copyrighted materials acept as permitted by the principles of "fair use".  Users may not copy or distribute electronic materials (including electronic mail, text, imates, programs or daata) without the explicit permission of the copyright holder.  Any responsibility for any consequence of copyright infringement lies with the user.  The Utopia Memorial Library expressly disclaims any liability or responsibility resulting from such use.

Disclaimer

Utopia Memorial Library has no control over the information accessed through the Internet and cannot be held responsible for its content or accuracy.  Utopia Memorial Library is not responsible for changes in content of the sources to which we link,  nor for the content of sources accessed through secondary links.  As with printed information, not all sources on the Internet provide accurate or complete information.  Users should evaluate Internet sources just as they do printed publications.

Legal Responsibility

     1.  The Utopia Memorial Library network computer resources may be used only for legal purposes by the public and staff.  Unacceptable purposes include, but are not limited to, the following:

          --Harassment of others,

          --Libel or slandering of others,

          --Destruction or damage to equipment, software, or date

           --Description or unauthorized monitoring of communications,

           --Unauthorized copying of copyright-protected material.

     2.  Users shall not attempt to access security-related or otherwise confidential information.

     3.  Users sshall not falsely identify or represent themselves or the Utopia Memorial Library or any of its policies sor services or otherwise commit forgery or fraud.

     4.  Users and staff members shall not employ Utopia Memorial Library resources for personal gain.

     5.  Electronic communication and publications originating fromthe Utopia Memorial Library are considered to be representative of the Library.  Users and staff are to adhere to the Utopia Memorial Library guidelines approved by the Library Board and Library Director.

Responsibilities of Users

To maximize Internet availabbility and to insure fair accessibility for all, the Utopia Memorial Library makes available the requirements for children's use and general use of the library's electronic communications equipment.

Children's Use

Parents and legal guardians must assume responsibility for deciding what library resources are appropriate for their children.  Parents should let their children know if there are materials which they do not want their children to use.  Parents/legal guardians are expected to supervise their children (under the age of 18) during access to the Internet. 

Regulatiions for the general use of the Utopia Memorial Library electronic communications equipment appears on the next page and is posted in the library close by the computers.

 GENERAL USE OF THE INTERNET

Read and sign the Utopia Memorial Library Computer Usage Policy    

     1.  Computers are available at the following times:

           Monday & Thursday:  9AM to-11:45AM - 1pm to 4:45PM

           Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday:  9AM to 11:45AM - 1PM to 2:45PM

     2.  Sessions limited to one (1) hour.  At the end of the first hour of use, user may have additional time in 30 minute increments as long as no one is waiting.

     3.  There will be no more than two people at the computer at one time.

     4.  You may not use your own software programs on library computers.

     5.  You may not use your own disks for downloading.  You must purchase formatted disks from the library staff.  These will be sold at a cost $1.00 each (floppy or CD)

     6.  You may request printing of documents at a cost o9f $.25 per page.

     7.  Misuse of the hardware, software and internet access will result in lost of computer privileges.

     8.  Children using the Internet must have a signed computer use policy  and dated permission letter from parent/legal guardian on file in order to use the Internet.

WARNING!  Although we use a virus-checker on library computers, this will not completely protect you.  Downloads  from the Internet may contain a virus, and you need to virus checking software on your computer.
